Which is perfect, since this holiday manor house in the UK is located in the Eden Valley. n nThis English country hall is a Grade II listed manor home nestling in the foothills of the North Pennines, one of 40 classified areas of outstanding natural beauty in England and Wales. It is set within its own sandstone walled grounds, which are entered through an arched gateway at the edge of the village. The grounds include an archery lawn, walled vegetable gardens and a Victorian castle folly at the foot of the lawn. The forested grounds extend for 20 acres, and incorporate a small tributary of the River Eden. The village of Melmerby is in the Eden Valley, lying between the Pennines and the Lake District, 12 miles from Ullswater and 9 miles from the historic market town of Penrith. There are a number of outstanding walking areas nearby along the edge of the River Eden, and one of England 's largest Druidic stone circles, Long Meg and her Daughters, is also close by. The village of Melmerby is unusual in that, despite its small size, it contains two Egon Ronay award-winning restaurants The Shepherd 's Inn Pub, and The Village Bakery. There is also a post office, tea shop and art gallery. The first mention of the existence of the Hall is during the reign of Edward II [1307-27] when it was owned by John de Denum. It passed some time later to the Threlkeld family, who extended the tower in the 17th century and again in the 18th century in a Georgian style at the front of the house. As a result of its gradual extension over the last 700 years, the house contains a number of unusual features including a priest hole, an enormous inglenook fireplace, doorways through old fireplaces, and roman barrel vaulted wine cellars. n nGround floor - hall, drawing room with open fire, oak paneled library with open fire, dining room with oak flooring and an enormous open fire salvaged from one of the local castles, family living room with open fire and adjacent playroom, front cloakroom, a large breakfasting kitchen with oak parquet flooring and hand crafted oak cabinetry, a sandstone larder room, utility room, boot room, back cloakroom, and a sandstone terrace with built in barbecue accessed by French doors from the family living room. The bedrooms on the upper floors are all furnished with antiques dating from the periods for which they are named with the exception of the luxurious master bedroom. First floor - master bedroom with a king size bed and en suite bathroom with a large built-in shower and a cast iron roll-top bath and dressing area. The master bedroom is connected to the 1st twin bedroom [Jacobean Room]. The 2nd double bedroom [Chinese Empire] has washing facilities. The 3rd double bedroom [Edwardian] has an en suite bathroom with built in shower and separate bath, and is connected via two doors to the 2nd twin room [Georgian] which has a decorative open fire. The 4th double bedroom [French Regency] also has a bathroom en suite. [NB: two of the en suite bathrooms have second doors which allow access from the landing]. Second floor: 5th double bedroom [Victorian] with a mahogany four poster bed, open fire and en suite bathroom, a billiards room with a full size table and an open fire, and a wc/shower room. 6th double bedroom [Edwardian] and a further twin bedroom [The Nursery] and a separate shower wc/shower room. There is a large flat screen TV with cable, a gas fireplace and three comfortable sofas to curl up in. The chef in your group will love the big open kitchen equipped with everything you'd need to prepare a gourmet meal, as it is open to the family room so they won't be hidden away from the group. Description:Built in 1840 the property is a fine example of a Tuscan country villa situated with its farm buildings on a plateau atop a ridge of hills at 500 m, with a wide park-like expanse of lawn and garden circled by woods in 15 hectares. The buildings, which have been lovingly restored without altering their original characteristics, provide a high standard of furnishings and fittings and decorations are carefully chosen using warm colours that compliment the locally made furniture. Once the country villa of the owner of vast tracts of land and farms in the Montagnola area, its overall shape seems to imply that the family and its needs grew. When taking the property for a group of 18 both the upper floor of the main villa and the attached stone house with independent entrance are available. nOne part of the accommodation is located on the first floor reached via a staircase up to a splendid furnished open loggia facing south whose wide arched windows allow a view of the lawn and pool area. Off the loggia one door leads into a country kitchen with marble-topped table. A hallway off the kitchen leads to a double and a twin/double bedroom, each with an ensuite shower room. From the loggia another door leads to a very large living/dining room which has sofas in front of a Tuscan fireplace, a table for 10 and a corner. From the living room, a corridor leads to three additional bedrooms, each with its own shower room. nThe stone house to the right of the villa is entered through a shady terrace leading to a large, comfortably furnished living room with a beautiful brick vaulted ceiling. On the same floor is a country kitchen with a fireplace, a dining room with a table for 10 and a shower room. A flight of stone steps takes you to the first floor with two double bedrooms, one with an ensuite shower room, and two double/twin bedrooms with two further shower rooms. nThere is plenty of room for the whole group to sit down to dinner together - either with an extra table in the very large dining room off the 1st floor loggia or outside on the wide lawns between the house and the pool. Also available on request is a separate catering kitchen and large dining room which can be taken for dinners or cookery classes. nWhile the vast lawns and sheltering trees ensure wonderful outdoor meals and the sunbeds around the decked pool is but a stroll away, Siena is only 20 mins away and many other major Tuscan attractions are nearby. Close to hand is Pievescola which annually celebrates the porcini mushrooms so plentiful in the surrounding woods, and in medieval walled cities there is the crystal of Colle Val d'Elsa, the towers of San Gimignano, the protected cloister of Torri and many other marvels to discover. The estate owners, who maintain an office on the property and will pass by to maintain the gardens and make sure all is well, are valuable resources. For more energetic types there are mountain bikes available, table tennis, volleyball and various walks in the surrounding woods.
