The village has a stunning cathedral that was built in the 15th century on the instruction of Pope Sisto V who lived in the village. The ceiling of the cathedral is a replica of parts of the sistine chapel in Rome (without the queues)! With a population of about 2500 the village is well serviced with a number of shops, restaurants, local bars, a post office, newsagent, grocer, butcher, bank etc. Not much English is spoken in this region but you'll find this is half the fun of being here and lots of arm waving and pointing with the odd word goes a very long way. Many of our guests enjoy the atmosphere that the village offers and this is why they return time and time again and have become friends. The village is 25 minutes from the provincial capital of Ascoli Piceno which is famous for its architecture, old travertine marble squares, churches, museums and is thought to be older than Rome. It is also packed with boutiques and cafe bars so is perfect for people watching. The Frasassi Caves, thought to be the largest limestone caves in Europe are well worth a visit - they have frequent tours during the summer months. Rome can easily be visited on a day trip and there are air conditioned buses from Grottamare to the centre of Rome daily. Located two blocks from Main Street in the Historic District, it’s an easy walk to shopping, restaurants, museums, and festivals at Marktplatz. Rockers line the front porch inviting you to relax and watch the world go by. A beautiful antique pine staircase greets you in the entry upon arrival. The house features two bedrooms, one with a king bed and one with a queen bed. The bathroom is purely Victorian with a footed tub, pedestal sink, and etched glass window. The living room has comfortable seating and Cable TV & DVD. The country kitchen has room for all to gather around the table. The antique replica stove actually works.
