During the 13th and 14th centuries it flourished as one of the major cities of Europe, growing rich from banking and the wool trade. The 14th century saw a great amount of construction: the Duomo, the Palazzo Publico and the Campo Square were all products of this time. Siena's glory took a tragic downturn by the end of the 14th century due to the Black Death and political upheaval. The city became little more than a rural market center. It was exactly this decline that accounts for the incredible state of medieval preservation that Siena exhibits today. Built across several hills and valleys, you will find a bit of up and down while walking through the historical center. However, the lack of traffic makes it a wonderful place to strolle28094even when packed with tourists, there is a quiet and easygoing feel. A must-see is the shell-shaped square called Il Campo. This is the focal point of the city as well as being the venue for the internationally renowned horse race, the Palio. nCasole d'Elsa hosts one of the most charming museums of the many recently opened/restyled in Siena. OPTIONAL SERVICES: Guided tours to the most important wine-cellars in Tuscany - Golfing - Mountain bike tours - Orchestral musical entertainment. The villa stocks an excellent selection of Tuscan and Umbrian wines and will purchase specific labels at the client 's request. What to do in the Siena region of Tuscany? The medieval town of Siena was founded by the Etruscans and later became a Roman colony. During the 13th and 14th centuries it flourished as one of the major cities of Europe, growing rich from banking and the wool trade. The 14th century saw a great amount of construction: the Duomo, the Palazzo Publico and the Campo Square were all products of this time. Siena 's glory took a tragic downturn by the end of the 14th century due to the Black Death and political upheaval. The city became little more than a rural market center. It was exactly this decline that accounts for the incredible state of medieval preservation that Siena exhibits today. Built across several hills and valleys, you will find a bit of up and down while walking through the historical center. However, the lack of traffic makes it a wonderful place to stroll-even when packed with tourists, there is a quiet and easygoing feel. A must-see is the shell-shaped square called Il Campo. This is the focal point of the city as well as being the venue for the internationally renowned horse race, the Palio. Casole d 'Elsa hosts one of the most charming museums of the many recently opened/restyled in Siena. The art exhibited ranges from the Neolithic era to the XVII century. A visit to the attached Collegiata di Casole is also highly recommended. Colle Val d 'Elsa 's newer outskirts offer very few attractions, aside from the crystal manufacturing-but the old town/historical center, Colle Alta, deserves to be seen. Particularly interesting in Colle Alta is the Palazzo Campana, built in the XVI century by the architect Agnolo di Baccio d 'Agnolo. This private building looks like a city gate, or a triumphal arch, and dominates the main street of Colle. The Cathedral shows a rich collection of paintings from the XVII century. Don 't miss the dramatic and intense Nativity by Rutilio Manetti (fourth chapel on the right, looking to the main altar).... more info >>

Description:The vineyard castle hotel Villa Antonio is located near the village of Postup on the southern tip of the Peljesac peninsula, offering picturesque views of the city of Orebic and the Isle of Korcula, birthplace of Marco Polo. The castle sits atop a lush vineyard, boasting a spectacular panorama of the countryside and small islands in the channel. The Peljesac peninsula - and specifically the village of Postup - has been renowned for the quality of its grapes and wine since Roman times. Due to the many sunny days in Peljesac, the sugar content in the local grapes reaches 22, the optimum gravity for producing the best Postup wine. At Villa Antonio we have over 7000 vines growing in the vineyard, but we have focused the crop's breeding to produce only two strains of select Postup grapes. This specialization allows him to produce a vintage of unanimously judged excellence. The surrounding coastline boasts a generous sprinkling of white sand beaches, from Villa Antonio to Orebic to Viganj (Croatia's top destination for professional windsurfing), to Loviste, a quiet fishing and farming town at the top of the Peljesac Peninsula. The Isle of Korcula can be reached by a quick hop across the channel on ferry or boat. A leisurely drive south through the countryside will be rewarded with a day of sightseeing and shopping in the marble-paved streets of Dubrovnik, the fairytale medieval city long regarded as the most beautiful settlement on earth. On the way back to Villa Antonio, you can stop in the town of Mali Ston for dinner at the world renowned Kapetanova Kuca restaurant, where delicious traditional Mediterranean and Dalmatian meals and desserts are the standard bill of fare. Only the freshest seafood from the daily catch is prepared here, surpassing the standards of the most finicky culinary experts. Fresh, simple and pure - this is how we eat in Dalmatia. As you continue your return to our castle, you'd do well to visit the oyster farmers in the village of Drace to enjoy the shellfish at below market prices. Take care not to bite into a pearl! At your request, we will also arrange tours along the Peljesac wine road to Dingacand Potomje, where the Mali Plavac grape varietal grows in abundance. All of our rooms and salons in the house are designed for complete relaxation, surrounded by natural beauty and permeated by soothing aromas, soft light and peaceful colors. Whether you visit our castle in the spring, summer, or late autumn when we barrel the new Postup wine, your stay in Peljesac at Villa Antonio will be absolutely unforgettable, a holiday of lifelong memories. Your host at Villa Antonio, Mr. Anton Bezek, recently received the distinction of Best Private Landlord of Croatia 2005, netting a gold cup in Cavtat from the deputy of the president of the Republic of Croatia.... more info >>
