While the island of Murter, where the Harbor Terrace is located, may not be as well known as some other beaches and islands, it will certainly not disappoint. Located in central Dalmatia between Zadar and Sibenik, Murter is a true island but is easily accessible by car across a small bridge. The island is small enough to avoid overcrowding in the summer, but is still buzzes with activity and provides all the amenities that you would want for even a lengthy holiday. While you never need to leave Murter to enjoy a complete vacation, you can venture out and enjoy a wonderful day trip to Split or other destination along the Dalmatian coast. Alternatively, hire a boat at the marina and spend the day exploring the Kornati Island National Park, consisting of 89 islands, just off of Murter. NATIONAL PARK KRKA The empire of Krka River, the magnificent karstic beauty traveling two thirds of its way to the sea through canyons. On its green path, it has seven falls, the last one being Skradinski buk with an average flow of 55 cubic meters of water per second. National Park Krka is rich in flora and fauna. 222 bird species live there, making it one of the most valuable ornithological areas in Europe. You can visit it by boat, car or on foot. Make sure you visit the ethno museum on one of the old mills. National Park Krka also has the only hawk training center in Croatia where you can see presentations of hunting with hawks and hawk trainers’ skills. KORNATI ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK is a group of about 130 islands, islets and reefs sprinkled in the deep blue sea of the Adriatic covering an area of about 64 square km. The Kornati have no permanent inhabitants, although the present owners from nearby larger Dalmatian islands periodically visit Kornati to tend their vineyards and olive groves, bringing their sheep to graze. The sea around the islands is rich with fish and a variety of marine life.... The islands have no spring water, only rainwater collected in water holes. The unique feature of the islands lies in their rugged shores with many caves and coves. The landscape of chalk limestone is covered with bushes of rosemary, juniper, lavender, thyme, myrtle and sage. Pathways leading to steep and huge cliffs facing the open sea and others gently decline towards the sea, ending in a small bay with a jetty and one or two fishermen's cottages surrounded by pine, olives and fig trees. There are daily boat trips from Sibenik or Murter to Kornati islands. PAKLENICA NATIONAL PARK is Croatian National park that cover the most attractive parts of southern Velebit, as well as its highest peaks, all located in Lika region. Paklenica is an area of unusual contact between the sea and the mountain, rich in natural forests of beech, black pine and mountain pine. Besides making trips to the National Park, exploring the countryside and seeing what sport opportunities there are is also recommended. As already mentioned there are many water sports you can join here like sailing, water skiing, windsurfing...Nautical center is situated in Šibenik where you can get all detailed information. We must not forget diving around Kornati, since it is a really special event, as is also the rafting on the river Cetina. Rafting on the river Cetina is a special adventure where you can see the karst area by the river and test your adventure spirit. We also suggest visiting the nearby Skradin, renting a bike in a rent-a-bike center and exploring the countryside. For the brave and those who search a true adventure there is bungee jumping from the Sibenik Bridge. All who have tried bungee say they would like to try in once more and maybe this is a good opportunity to do this, for the first or some other time. NEARBY CITIES 1. City of Sibenik – one of the oldest native Croatian cities on the Adriatic Sea. 2. City of Zadar - a city of exceptional history and rich cultural heritage, a city of tourism. Description:Our collection of 12 villas are situated just a 10-minute stroll from the sand-dune backed beach of Campomarino, with all the comforts needed for a nice seaside holiday. Each villa has its own entrance, private gated parking, garden and terrace for eating al fresco. Each of the luxury self catering villas has three bedrooms and two shower-rooms. The villas come fully equipped with air-conditioning, linen, towels, TV, iron & iron board, kitchen utensils and washing machine. On arrival, you will find a bottle of local Italian wine on the table – and if you send us a shopping list in advance, we will ensure you have fresh, locally sourced food for your first Italian meal. You can reach the village of Campomarino di Maruggio by flying to either Bari (Palese) or Brindisi (Papola Casale) Airports with less than a 1.5hrs drive. The region of Puglia has 800km of stunning coastline, covering the entire heel of south of Italy. With the beach just around the corner, go-karting, snorkelling and horse-riding – not to mention all those gelaterias – there is something for the whole group.Puglia is the ‘heel of Italy’ – the long peninsula in the south of the country that juts out into the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas. The region is particularly popular in the summer months of July and August, when temperatures reach 30*C and above. In the quieter months of May, June, September and October, temperatures range between 20-25*C. Famed for its culinary produce – from olive oil to wine and from raw fish to 200 types of pasta – Puglia is known as the garden of Italy. The region is dotted with little white conical buildings called trulli, which were originally used as dry storehouses, but are now converted into dwellings. There are many historic towns to explore, with narrow mazes of streets and piazzas surrounded by Baroque ad Greek architecture. What to find nearby GROCERY SHOPPING: The two nearest supermarkets are just a five minute walk from the villas. For local specialities and delicacies, Maruggio (five minutes away in the car) has a local butcher, a fresh fruit and vegetable shop and bakery. PHARMACY: There is a local pharmacy a ten-minute walk from the villas and another in Maruggio, a slightly longer walk away or accessible by car. BARS AND GELATERIA: There are a few bars within walking distance from the villas – try ‘Il planet’ for excellent cocktails.A ten-minute stroll away from the villas is the beach bar Frutteria Annibale –perfect for a fresh fruit platter, an afternoon drink or a casual evening out. Combining a bar with an ice-cream parlour is a uniquely Italian concept: Panna e Cioccolato , La Meringa and Sandrino are all within walking distance of the villas. Our favourite bar gelateria is Panna e Cioccolato, especially for its ‘aperitivo’: try the refreshing combination of Aperol (a light version of Campari) and cedrata (made from a local citrus fruit called etrog). RESTAURANTS: For a light meal, head to a ‘rosticcerie’. Il Bomber and Rosticceria Longo sell ‘panzerotto’ (pastries filled with tasty tomato sauce and mozzarella) and ‘focaccia’ (delicious local bread topped with onions, olive oil, capers and black olives) and are just a few minutes’ walk from the villas.Le Piccole Ore is a family friendy restaurant favoured by locals. It offers an outside terrace or inside tables and serves traditional Italian fare.La Siesta is a family-run restaurant is known for its delicious traditional food and amazing wood-fired pizza oven in the heart of Sava, about 10km inland from Campomarino.Two of our favourite beachfront restaurants are situated between Campomarino and Torre Oveo. Both Elisir and Posto 9 (10-minutes drive) are relaxing family-friendly, and offer a variety of delicious dishes, from pizza to seafood.Surrounded by acres of olive groves and countryside, the “La 'nchianata Pub can offers delicious local food and a fantastic atmosphere. The restaurant is just a short drive towards Torre Ovo, following signs to Torricella. ACTIVITIES:Wine Tour - Cantine di San Marzano is one of the most modern wine production facilities in the south. The tour of the winery includes tasting, a visit to one of the more ancient vineyards and a potted history of the wine production in the area. During the ‘Cantine Aperte’ event, this winery opens the door over few days during which guided tours, tasting of wines, cultural events, music performances and dance. Diving - The Mare del Sud Diving Centre is 10 min walk from the villas, inside the Campomarino seaport. They organise dives at nearby San Pietro in Bevagna, where you can swim around the 22 white marble sarcophagi dating from AD150-300. Another interesting diving point is the Chidro river, a natural oasis of rare beauty. And to end the experience, they offer you a snack of ‘taralli’ (a pretzel-shaped breadstick) with a glass of wine. Snorkelling / diving: Only 50m off the sandy beach between Casalbate and San Cataldo is an incredible wreck, sunk by the Royal Navy in 1941. You can actually swim from room to room inside it. The turnoff is just beyond Torre Rinalda if you are heading towards San Cataldo. Go-karting - There are two go-karting tracks nearby: one between Torricella and Sava and another at nearby Maruggio, no more than a 15-mis drive. Description:This tropical Bali dream house, located in Padanggalak 3 miles north of Sanur, Bali, is what couple Anni Crofut and Mel Maliki like to call their 'third child' (they also have two boys). A testament to their cross-cultural marriage, the house blends the open-air feel and tropical materials of Mel's native Indonesia, with the exposed wood, open floor plan, and cathedral ceilings of the old barns of Anni's rural Massachusetts.Before building, Anni and Mel had spent years renting houses in Bali, so they were very clear about what they did not want. We wanted to avoid the sort of villa you see all over the island that is built to look romantic - open-air, no doors, thatched roofed - but is in fact quite impractical. Coming from New England where the winters are so rough, I'd always thought of the tropics as gentle, but those houses taught me that a tropical climate has its own hazards: bugs, dust, mosquitoes, ants, mold, gecko's, smoke from burning fields, and a very fast pace of decay. In the open houses, we couldn't keep nature out because there was no way to close in the space. Mosquitoes were abundant, and the thatch would shed, and the geckos living in the thatch would contribute their own fall-out. We'd essentially spend a good part of each day just sweeping up! Armed with a concept and a list of things to avoid, Anni and Mel chose Balinese architect Ketut Arthana. Internationally recognized, Ketut has a reputation for optimizing and managing space. He instantly understood what we wanted. He set the ceilings high, like a barn's, but added variety to the roof-line by slightly lowering the kitchen roof and using the typically Balinese cross-hatched exposed rafters. He wasn't afraid to recommend tile over thatch, for its strength, quality and ease of maintenance, and we found that by lining the under-side of the tile with basket-colored woven rattan, we were able to achieve the same soft, natural effect from inside as you get with thatch, but without the problems. Ketut placed giant sliding glass doors and windows around the perimeters of the entire house, giving the space plenty of light and ventilation during the day and an open-air feel, but with the option of shutting out the bugs, water and dust at night and during storms. Above these doors, Ketut added a ring of slim rectangular windows for ventilation and style.Once complete, Ketut handed the drawings over and Anni and Mel took charge. Mel oversaw the entire building process, and I made all the interior design decisions. I didn't pay attention to rules and conventions. I was never focused on making the house fit into a category (rustic, modern, contemporary…). I just did what I found beautiful. The result is a huge mix of influences, combining primitive and modern, old and new, raw and finished. Anni brought her love of Mexican color into her paint choices, and her appreciation for Shaker simplicity into her choice of old, strong, and simple wood furniture. I was very relieved when, in the end, it did in fact all come together.Color is a major theme. The main living space has a soft cream terrazzo floor contrasting with two bold papaya-orange walls and another sailor blue wall. The ventilation windows hold circular coins of colored glass framed in teak, giving a warmth and funky flare to the entire space. The kitchen and bedroom floors are richly colored in traditional Dutch-style cement tiles. More color flows through the deep-set, vertical, and whimsically stained-glass windows along the stairs.In contrast to the bright colors, raw materials ground the house in the natural and neutral, creating what architect Yew Kwan famously described as high-style primitive. Raw teak trees frame the kitchen space and act as pillars on the terrace, Y-shaped stripped coffee balusters and teak banisters form the railings along the stairs and balcony, marble stones and large plates of slate form a mosaic on the master bathroom wall, and worn gray river stones provide drainage where house meets land.Outside, the property is ringed with a mustard-yellow fence overflowing with pink, purple and yellow bougainvillea. Verdant gardens border the wallsl, offering the eye a tropical richness. A rice-terraced-shaped pool fills one corner, while lush mango and Frangipani trees create umbrellas against the sun. Ocean breezes blow in from the east, cooling the land and house, even in the hottest season.And you can see the ocean from the house! That third floor room wasn't in the drawings, but one day, Mel was up on the rafters and he realized that from up there we could see the sea. We learned that it wouldn't cost much to raise up the roof and add an extra room, so we just did it. No permits needed. Nothing. Just like a wave of the hand. You could never do that in the US! Anni muses. That room is a retreat, way up high, for meditation or writing, a place to be alone, or for play for young kids.In this same brave and spontaneously creative spirit, Anni and Mel made the decision to move back to the US in 2006 after living in their house for several years. We wanted our kids to discover their American half, and to be educated there. Mel and I were at a cross-roads professionally, so it was the time to go. Of course we were so sad to leave our house. But we're suckers for adventure. The house has been rented since then, but Anni and Mel and their boys return every year to repair and spruce up the house and to enjoy it themselves.This house has a warmth and grace and artistry to it, but it is also a very livable house, peaceful and soothing, also fabulous for entertaining, and very convenient to Sanur, Denpasar and Ubud, says one renter. Many happy memories were made in that house, he continued, and we want to return again if we can.GREAT VENTILATION:The three bedrooms and the office all have AC. The main space is well ventilated with large sliding glass doors and a 7 meter spread which allows for nice fresh air circulation, enhanced also by 4 ceiling fans. A ring of a ring of slim rectangular teak ventilation windows ring the entire main space as well as all of the bedrooms, adding more breeze and circulation.SIS AND WATI:Wati, our lovely helper, lives nearby and works full-time at the house. Wati will make your stay easy and pleasant. She will prepare the beds and house fully before your arrival. During your stay she will do your laundry, make your beds every day, replace soap and toilet paper, wash towels and linens once a week, and keep the entire house clean. She is available to prepare breakfast and one meal/day WITH FOOD COSTS AT TENANTS' EXPENSE. Her breakfasts can include any of the following: tea, coffee, fruit, yogurt, toast, eggs, french toast, or pancakes. If you wish her to cook one meal/day for you, please note that she cooks only Javanese food, so for any other cooking she would need overseeing and instruction. You will find a menu of her meal options in the welcome book. She speaks competent English. Sis, our gardener and grounds keeper, is Wati's brother. He also lives nearby and works full time at the house. Every day he cleans the pool and tends to the gardens, lawn, buildings and property. He has worked at the house for 10 years and knows the property intimately. If you would like errands/cooking/help from either Wati or Sis which is beyond the scope of their responsibilities outlined above, we ask that this be arranged directly between you and Wati or Sis and this additional work should take place at the end of the staff's work hours and at the tenants' own expense. All details about the house are clearly outlined in a welcome book you will find waiting for you when you arrive.Our young and gorgeous Balinese friend Wulan is available to give you private Balinese dance lessons or a private showing of Balinese dance at the house (see photo) if you wish. Twin mahogany beds in 3rd bedroom. One of the twin beds can be made into a toddler's bed by inserting a wooden rail (provided) on one side of the bed. This rail will prevent the child from falling out of the bed. Two single floor mattresses are also included in the rental and can be used as extra bedding.
