You can reach the village of Campomarino di Maruggio by flying to either Bari (Palese) or Brindisi (Papola Casale) Airports with less than a 1.5hrs drive. The region of Puglia has 800km of stunning coastline, covering the entire heel of south of Italy. With the beach just around the corner, go-karting, snorkelling and horse-riding – not to mention all those gelaterias – there is something for the whole group.Puglia is the ‘heel of Italy’ – the long peninsula in the south of the country that juts out into the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas. The restaurant is just a short drive towards Torre Ovo, following signs to Torricella. ACTIVITIES:Wine Tour - Cantine di San Marzano is one of the most modern wine production facilities in the south. The tour of the winery includes tasting, a visit to one of the more ancient vineyards and a potted history of the wine production in the area. During the ‘Cantine Aperte’ event, this winery opens the door over few days during which guided tours, tasting of wines, cultural events, music performances and dance. Diving - The Mare del Sud Diving Centre is 10 min walk from the villas, inside the Campomarino seaport. They organise dives at nearby San Pietro in Bevagna, where you can swim around the 22 white marble sarcophagi dating from AD150-300. Another interesting diving point is the Chidro river, a natural oasis of rare beauty. And to end the experience, they offer you a snack of ‘taralli’ (a pretzel-shaped breadstick) with a glass of wine. Snorkelling / diving: Only 50m off the sandy beach between Casalbate and San Cataldo is an incredible wreck, sunk by the Royal Navy in 1941. You can actually swim from room to room inside it. The turnoff is just beyond Torre Rinalda if you are heading towards San Cataldo. Go-karting - There are two go-karting tracks nearby: one between Torricella and Sava and another at nearby Maruggio, no more than a 15-mis drive. The house features two big bedroom, an open plan kitchen, air-conditions, solar heater, three bathrooms, a spacious living dining room with brick fireplace and a magnificent view of the old town.120 m2 medieval city house,2 bathrooms .The house has 3 floors, the ground floor consists of lounge with 2 sofas and table, Original open fire oven, and this is next to the modern Turkish style kitchen, which consists of oven, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and microwave with a sitting area. Leading off the kitchen is the main bathroom, which has a Jacuzzi, and twin sinks. The first floor is a dinning area which has sitting for 6 people with side cupboard and display cabinet. This floor also has its own toilet facilities. What is amazing is a copy of a fresco of an English knight receiving the last rites before the Grand Battle with the Muslims lead by Suleiman. The top floor is the bedroom which has a king side iron bed with a diamond sprung mattress for extra comfort. Also the are toilet facilities on this floor with wonderful view over medieval town. There is air conditioning on this floor which is very rarely used due to the constant breeze flowing through the windows. There is also TV on this floor. THE HISTORY History is about stories and this house has a story of love and tragedy. The house which has now been split into three sections. During the reign of the ottoman empire. Prior to this it was used by the knights of St John who build the house in 1311 prior to the fall of Suleiman. The house during this period had a large square at the front, which was used to exercise the horses from the stables from the back of the house. Combat training was constantly held as the knights of St John were a military order. However the knights who lived at the house lead a frugal life with a code of honour and loyalty to the Pope in Rome. Their greatest love was for their horses which many had been brought from England. TRAGEDY Without going into too much detail when the first crusade destroyed Jerusalem they also executed all the inhabitants. And the Muslims had never forgiven the Templers who were also based now in Rhodes. So when the fight for Rhodes started there was no love or quarter to be given. The city itself was split into areas where each military order protected certain gates. The English protected the main entrance and the walls at other side. And the French unfortunately protected the rear gates where the Muslims broke through. Some of the English knights turn to face the onslaught and try to hold them back at the square in front of the house. They would of mounted their beloved houses as there were no hope and formed lines to try to hold the Muslims back. But they were completely outnumbered and overrun and all their knights and their squires and foot soldiers were slaughtered . As the code for the knights was never to retreat. Until this day they are always be remembered for their honour and loyalty to the Crusades. As they would say, GOD SAVE THE KING AND THE POPE. Footnote They say St Paul after the battle negotiated with Suleiman to let the survivors leave and go to Malta. These became known as the hospitalers.
