Description:Travel north from Boise about 30 miles, make the turn onto Banks Lowman Road, and ride the stunning, wooded crest of the hills in Boise National Forest for another 20 miles, or so, until you reach a sliver of verdant beauty known as Garden Valley. Just north of there, perched on a pine-covered hill overlooking the valley, is this gorgeous cabin with three bedrooms, loft, and room for seven where the views from the wrap-around windows and deck will make you feel as though you 're out in the pines! nWhen you 're in the spacious, open living space of Huckleberry House, you 'll be trapped: captive to the thick forest that greets you through every window, and the gorgeous interior with its soaring, timber-trussed ceiling, elegant wood floor, and charming wood stove whose vent snakes up two stories into the roof. Bring your own DVDs to enjoy on the player, or borrow one from the library. There 's a TV (sorry, no cable or internet). And for extra fun for the kids (or you!), indulge in a little friendly competition at the air hockey table up in the loft. nHuckleberry House has three bedrooms and a loft. Wake up in the king bed in the master bedroom and slip out onto the deck for a deep breath of fresh mountain air before heading out to breakfast. Prior to the opening of Highway 17 (a.k.a., Banks/Lowman Road) in 1999, the road to Lowman was not for the faint of heart. At that time, the road to Lowman was not via Garden Valley, but rather by a treacherous gravel switchback snaking up from Idaho City. Now, Highway 17 is a paved corridor that whisks the motorist through breathtaking scenery, historic places, and intriguing landscapes. It offers incomparable glimpses of wilderness, yet is easily and safely traveled. nThis beautiful area has played host to trappers, miners, loggers, and a legion of Roosevelt's conservation workers in the 1930s. Description:By the time the government named the post office after local miner and homesteader William Billy Crouch in 1934, this beautiful area had already played host to trappers, miners, loggers, and a legion of Roosevelt 's conservation workers. Only their spirit remains. What 's left, however, is the same pristine beauty that has always characterized this region. Flanked by Boise National Forest and the Middle Fork of the Payette River to the east, this wonderful two-story cabin (about 1.5 hours north of Boise) is perched on a bluff overlooking a stream and verdant meadow that 's also home to beaver, elk, deer, and native trout. With stunning vistas all around, you can luxuriate in the hot tub or rock on the six-person glider on the deck as you savor the sights and sounds of gorgeous Grand Valley. nA wood stove, much like one old Billy Crouch might have used, is the centerpiece of this cabin 's cozy living room. In winter, throw a log on the fire, sink into the plush chairs and sip some coffee or hot chocolate as you chat, or watch the cable TV or a movie on the DVD player. Or, check the local attractions on the laptop with the free Wi-Fi. A vaulted ceiling and plenty of windows give you ample space with great views of the landscape outside. In summer, venture out over 200 feet of private access to the stream nearby. Streamside also has a space on its nearly two acres for volleyball and outdoor fireplace and fire pit, so bring some napkins for those s 'mores and toasted marshmallows. nThe master bedroom of Streamside is in the loft and comes with a queen bed and a postcard view of the meadow outside. There 's also a full futon in the loft. Another bedroom downstairs has a double bed. This cabin has two full bathrooms and plenty of hot water. nLittle Crouch, just a few minutes away, is actually a popular stopping off point on the Boise/Lowman/Banks loop - a favorite daytrip by car - where motorists can grab a bite to eat on their way back to Boise. There are four eateries in Crouch where you 'll find good but not exotic food. So, if you 're cooking in the cabin, should be no problem. Streamside has a big, modern kitchen with plenty of cabinet and counter space, a microwave for quick snacks, and a well-stocked spice rack. nWhen you stay in this cabin, you 're just minutes from the Middle Fork of the Payette River, so you can expect excellent fly-fishing for native bull trout, cutthroat, browns, and bulls. There are river runs for kayaking, rafting, and just plain tubing in rapids that go all the way to Class 5. The entrance to Boise National Forest is close by where, of course, you can hike, hunt (in season) and bike. Hikers, you 'll be close to 12 trail heads. Snowlovers: Garden Valley offers 250 miles of groomed snowmobile, snowshoe and x-country ski trails for a total of 250 miles of trail. Less than a mile from the lake, this two story home is your ticket to all the great sites and activities the area offers. Enjoy all the boating, fishing, hiking - you name it - available to you when you choose this charming home for your getaway! nSet down slightly from the road, this home is accessed by a short stairway. Surrounded by trees, it has a warm and rustic ambiance. Once inside, head up the stairs to the living area. You'll probably be spending most of your time here, and rightly so. Just one look at the view from the deck and you may not want to go back inside! The living room, however, is comfortable and nicely decorated with a plush chair and recliner, perfect for kicking back with a book, magazine or your laptop. Before you leave home, pack a couple of your favorite DVDs to enjoy on the player. (Sorry, no cable TV). Your well-behaved doggie is welcome as well! nIf you're okay with driving, there are a few restaurants in the area, but you won't be ordering haute cuisine. So you'll want to bring stuff for meals. The home has a full kitchen with lots of room and all the equipment your cook will need from prep to clean up, including lots of utensils, pots, pans, a microwave, and a dishwasher. There are lots of cabinets to store what you brought, and room for four at the table when you're ready to serve. Weather permitting, take advantage of the gas grill on the deck and enjoy the tremendous view with your barbeque. nThis home sleeps six. There are three bedrooms, all on the lower level. Two of the bedrooms have queen beds and the third has a full-sized futon. You'll also find two full bathrooms. nWhen you stay at this home, you'll be just a 10 minute walk from the public docks where you can rent boats, paddle boards, pontoons, wave runners, or kayaks. At Gateway Marina you can dock your boat, rent a boat, stock up on stuff, buy local art, and have a beer and a sandwich. If you're a cyclist or hiker, you'll want to hop on the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes, a 72 mile trail paved from Mullan to Plummer. Cycle or roller blade to historic Heyburn State Park, just seven miles south, and spend a day hiking the trails. Or, head over to the Thompson Lake Wildlife Refuge on the town's northeast border. Bring the camera and photograph osprey, eagle, white swans, and other wildlife. nHarrison is located at the mouth of the Coeur d'Alene River, so there's plenty of kayaking, rafting, and, of course, fishing. You also have the option to store your skis and boots at the River Run Lodge which will allow you to walk or take the free shuttle bus for your day of skiing at Baldy. The bike path runs north for 10 miles and south for 16 miles along the Big Wood River with great scenery to take in as you ride or walk. It is groomed in the winter for Nordic Skiing and is also available to ski on to get to the lifts.
