Description:Eight hundred years ago, the Yancey County area was a thoroughfare and hunting ground for the Cherokee Indians. In the mid 1700s, Scottish, English and Irish farmers settled the mountains and fertile river valleys. The original settlers’ cabins and Cherokee villages have long since vanished, replaced over time by quaint towns and hamlets sprinkled throughout the valleys and in the various hollows of the surrounding mountains. This land was heavily mined from the mid 1800s through the mid 1900s for mica, feldspar, lithium and other minerals. Logging during the 1900s resulted in new hardwood forests and lush undergrowth.Yancey County is known for preserving its local cultures and traditions, including the architecture of past generations. Today young and old alike celebrate Yancey County’s multi cultural heritage through education, music, storytelling, crafts and other special events.Nestled below Mount Mitchell and connected to trails that wind under dense hemlocks,Serendipity is a huge drawing card for outdoor camping enthusiasts. Located at mountain elevations, Serendipity provides coolness andquietness in a remote setting. During the day, visitors will find these trails to explore.Mount Mitchell Trail: Starting from thecampground, this steep arduous trail travels 5.7miles and climbs 3,200 feet to Mount Mitchell’ssummit at 6,684 feet.Lost Cove Ridge Trail: This very steep3.3 mile trail climbs to the Green Knob LookoutTower beside the Blue Ridge Parkway.River Loop Trail: This 3.1 mile trail loopsacross the Black Mountain Campground andSouth Toe River’s two bridges.Trails to Waterfalls: A beautiful cascadingwaterfall awaits hikers on the 0.25 mile trail toSetrock Creek Falls. Roaring Fork Falls is three miles north on FR 472, near NC 80 junction.Briar Bottom Bicycle Trail: This 1.2 miletrail starts at the group campground gate. Tracingthe South Toe River, the trail crosses two locust bridges and loops around the campground.... more info >>

Description:Experience Asheville's premiere Montford Historic District in a completely private, quiet, spacious guest apartment. Located in a beautiful two story, owner-occupied home, the apartment is on the second floor on the left hand side of the house. The home is on a quiet side street and offers off-street parking and a safe and friendly neighborhood. RETURNING GUESTS RECEIVE DISCOUNTS! $90 OFF MONTHLY RENTAL AND $60 OFF WEEKLY RENTAL Enjoy the lovely back yard gardens and be entertained by my seven goofy chickens. I am happy to dispel any misconceptions you might have about roosters waking you up at 4 a.m. Roosters are not allowed in the city! My girls' coop is located in far away enough from the house that the only sound you might hear when the windows are open is their enthusiastic announcement of an egg for your morning omelet! Under a wide canopy of large trees enjoy a short walk to downtown. On your way you'll see historic homes built in the early 1900's and luxury bed and breakfasts like The Lion and The Rose and The Black Walnut Inn. Side walks still have some of the original bricks from the early 1900's. If you happen to be here on a Wednesday from April through November and decide to walk downtown for lunch, stop at the local farmer's market on the way back. It's located in the parking lot of the Chamber of Commerce. You'll find artisan goat cheese, pastries, music, fresh flowers and vegetables, all locally grown. Perhaps you'll stop in one of our two neighborhood pubs, Tod's Tasties Cafe and Nine Mile Cafe, which is just two blocks from the apartment. In the other direction, north, you'll find the Asheville Botanical Garden an easy walk. Each species of native vegetation is marked for easy identification. Enjoy the quaint gift shop. Adjacent to the Botanical Gardens is University of North Carolina's Asheville campus, often voted one of the best and most affordable small liberal arts college. The University is home to The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement which operates The College for Seniors (you don't have to be a senior to attend classes). From the website, The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR) is an award-winning, internationally-acclaimed learning community dedicated to promoting lifelong learning, leadership, community service, and research. Rolling Stone Magazine named Asheville's premiere music club, The Orange Peel, Number 5 on it's list of Top Music venues in the country. Ashevillian, Robert Moog, who invented the Moog synthesizer, left a giant legacy. Experience how his invention effected the music world in the Moog museum (easy walk) downtown and join others who journey from all over the world who attend the annual October Moogfest. More about the apartment.....The shower with claw foot tub has plenty of hot water and excellent water pressure. Amenities also include a top-quality queen-size bed, a fully equipped modern kitchen and bathroom, separate dining area, soft comfy furniture, high thread-count cotton linens. On site eco-considerations: organically raised chickens (NO ROOSTERS), rain barrels for water cachement, organic vegetable gardens, composting, and vermiculture (worms eat my garbage and provide me with their nutrient rich castings). More than two? Extra sleeping quarters are on the Living Room Futon. A padded topper is available for additional comfort. Warm and cozy tee shirt sheets are provided. Plenty of blankets and pillows. Secured Wi-fi connection is provided. A welcome basket of instant hot chocolate, herbal teas and FRESH EGGS awaits your arrival. Come see for yourself why Asheville has been called The Paris of the South. RETURNING GUESTS RECEIVE 10% OFF THE MONTHLY RATE. A savings of $90. RETURNING GUESTS RECEIVE 10% OFF THE WEEKLY RATE. Description:Have you ever heard May Peepers? Have you ever floated on your back in a pool while at dusk the bats are gathering their daily ration high above in the trees? Have you ever allowed yourself to lie in a bed of trillium? Have you ever gathered wild ramps right outside your door for that evening's supper? Have you ever found yourself, clothes and all, just day dreaming in a pool of cool, clear, mountain water in the mid-day heat while the creak gurgles past? Have you ever allowed yourself to think of fairies and gremlins while lightning bugs flit on and off and nature puts itself to bed? Do that and more while spending blissful summer moments to remember on this remarkable Asheville Estate in the mountains of North Carolina, an hour's drive outside of Asheville. With good reason Oppenheimer and the old club of Tennessee Valley boys chose this natural wonder full of creeks and fish and clear skies away from the madness of the rest of the world during WWII. Think about basking in the sun near a lap pool hiking in the mountains golfing on a course with little wait time fishing on creeks with fresh-water trout exercising in a fully equipped gym going to Penland, one of the premier craft schools in the country playing tourist at the Biltmore in Asheville eating at Hector's where you'll find only genuine foodies savoring his amazing cuisine or, just spend time hunting for Indian artifacts being a Leafer in the Smokeys during the Fall . . . even find yourself with a group of locals having a good ho-down . . . and, of course, so much more. Not only Oppenheimer and his buddies, but the Vanderbilts chose this area for a reason. You can, too.
