Description:Eight hundred years ago, the Yancey County area was a thoroughfare and hunting ground for the Cherokee Indians. In the mid 1700s, Scottish, English and Irish farmers settled the mountains and fertile river valleys. The original settlers’ cabins and Cherokee villages have long since vanished, replaced over time by quaint towns and hamlets sprinkled throughout the valleys and in the various hollows of the surrounding mountains. This land was heavily mined from the mid 1800s through the mid 1900s for mica, feldspar, lithium and other minerals. Logging during the 1900s resulted in new hardwood forests and lush undergrowth.Yancey County is known for preserving its local cultures and traditions, including the architecture of past generations. Today young and old alike celebrate Yancey County’s multi cultural heritage through education, music, storytelling, crafts and other special events.Nestled below Mount Mitchell and connected to trails that wind under dense hemlocks,Serendipity is a huge drawing card for outdoor camping enthusiasts. Description:The Little Sister is a sweet, quiet, cozy apartment attached to our home in north Asheville, a short 5 minute drive from art infused downtown Asheville, and a 10 minute walk from the historic Grovepark Inn (spa treatments, glass of wine on their porch). The apartment has a back porch that overlooks our beautiful flower and vegetable garden (our guests can even enjoy the fruits of that if they like), and the neighborhood is wonderful for walking, biking and running. Beautiful Beaver Lake is short walk away, which is great for a walk, run or ride. We are happy to direct to hikes on the Blue Ridge Parkway and can tell you where to get supplies - we'll even lend you a backpack or cooler if you need it. Numerous restaurants, and stores are within walking distance so the location is quite convenient - there is even a brewery that shows $3 movies and serves great pizza within a 10 minute walk (Asheville Pizza). There is a fully equipped kitchen, wireless internet, satellite TV (even has DVR for recording your favorite shows), a comfortable queen size bed, and air conditioning. See more information on our own . If we can make your trip better in any way, we'll try. We don't typically offer breakfast, but we do supply coffee with cream and sugar. If you'd like us to pick up bagels, juice and fruit for your arrival, we'd be happy to do that for $15 for two people per day. If you like exciting bike rides, we can recommend a few for you - we even have one extra bike for your use. There are great rides from the apartment up Sunset Mountain - big climbs and fast ascents! The neighborhood is very popular for running and walking as well. To see more information and calendar go to our and look at the Little Sister.... more info >>

My girls' coop is located in far away enough from the house that the only sound you might hear when the windows are open is their enthusiastic announcement of an egg for your morning omelet! Under a wide canopy of large trees enjoy a short walk to downtown. On your way you'll see historic homes built in the early 1900's and luxury bed and breakfasts like The Lion and The Rose and The Black Walnut Inn. Side walks still have some of the original bricks from the early 1900's. If you happen to be here on a Wednesday from April through November and decide to walk downtown for lunch, stop at the local farmer's market on the way back. Adjacent to the Botanical Gardens is University of North Carolina's Asheville campus, often voted one of the best and most affordable small liberal arts college. The University is home to The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement which operates The College for Seniors (you don't have to be a senior to attend classes). From the website, The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR) is an award-winning, internationally-acclaimed learning community dedicated to promoting lifelong learning, leadership, community service, and research. Have a spa experience and enjoy a restful yoga class and enjoy a late lunch ... all downtown and within walking distance. Recent guest remarks: We met Cathy when we rented her furnished apartment in Asheville for a month (August 2011). We immediately became great friends. The apartment was beautiful -- clean, light and open. She had thought of all the little details to make us completely comfortable during our stay, and the kitchen was the best outfitted of any short term furnished rental I have come across. Since I love to cook (and that's one of the reasons I use a furnished rental instead of motel/hotel options when I travel) this was really important to me. Chickens and an organic garden in the back yard in an area full of trees and greenery made an urban location feel like a country retreat. There was also a beautiful common sitting area in the back yard which was the locus of many a pleasant evening conversation or spontaneous potluck meal. We were close to downtown and to the University with its wonderful Saturday tailgate market. Perfect location and perfect hostess! We made a friend for life when we had the good fortune to rent this lovely place from Cathy! January 2012 guests from Winston-Salem: Cathy's house is a wonderful way to visit Asheville. Close walk to the downtown and a stone's throw from Montford Park. The apartment, moreover, is comfortable and quiet, with useful amenities and private bathroom. Spend some time with Cathy, too - she's a considerate host, puts her guests at ease. I bet we'll be back.... more info >>

Description:This spacious apartment is cozy and ideal for those who enjoy cooking, dancing and plenty of privacy. There is a full kitchen, open dining/living area , bedroom and bathroom. High speed wireless internet, conveinent parking. This century old house was in decline when we bought it 22 years ago. We have resurrected the splendor of the structure reclaiming original trim wood and flooring that was fashioned with virgin timber from this region in the Blue Ridge mountains. My husband, Tom, has done most of the renovation himself, incorporating his artistic flair and unusual floor plan designs. We have created private and common spaces in this roomy house. You will have options whether to spend time with other travelers or be on your own. We will most likely meet you during your stay as we come and go as needed and will be available by phone. Victoria has a working studio in the house that is independent of the rental spaces. She may be open for business during your stay if you would like to see her jewelry and Tom’s books, both of which would make great mementos of your stay here. Simply walk out the door, down the hill and experience Marshall, a truly unique mountain town. If you enjoy great coffee, food, live music, beer and wine, old-timey dry goods and hardware stores, beautiful local art ,imports from around the world, cool bicycles, awesome junk, seasonal weekly farmer's market, artist's studios and interesting special events- it's just a 5 minute walk! Look forward to meeting you!... more info >>
