Description:Have you ever heard May Peepers? Have you ever floated on your back in a pool while at dusk the bats are gathering their daily ration high above in the trees? Have you ever allowed yourself to lie in a bed of trillium? Have you ever gathered wild ramps right outside your door for that evening's supper? Have you ever found yourself, clothes and all, just day dreaming in a pool of cool, clear, mountain water in the mid-day heat while the creak gurgles past? Have you ever allowed yourself to think of fairies and gremlins while lightning bugs flit on and off and nature puts itself to bed? Do that and more while spending blissful summer moments to remember on this remarkable Asheville Estate in the mountains of North Carolina, an hour's drive outside of Asheville. Not only Oppenheimer and his buddies, but the Vanderbilts chose this area for a reason. You can, too. Description:The essence of these ancient mountains is palpable in the majestic views and forests around this magical place. You rightly sense something quite special is awaiting you while meandering on the lane far through the surrounding sparsely developed 60-acre forest tract, filled with large rhododendron and mountain laurel. The spirit and past presence of the Cherokee is felt here and evidenced by the countless arrowheads found on the property. Peace, calm and well being envelop you upon arrival and will keep you spellbound until you leave. nNestled among the oak and pine on the shore of Lake Glenville is one of the lake’s most magnificent properties. Lake Glenville at 3500 ft., fed by 4 waterfalls with 26 miles of shoreline, is the highest man made lake east of the Mississippi: widely known for its exquisite beauty, purity and temperate summer climate. Designed 5 years ago by the famed William T. Baker, this house seems both lodge and gracious home. The soaring 23-foot great room with its massive beamed ceiling, large stone fireplace and immense windows boasts an unbelievable view a mile down the lake, evoking a sense of grandeur well beyond the ordinary. nLife here is at its best however when you are outside. But there are too many choices! Relax on the large covered porch under the ceiling fan with your feet up listening to music. Or perhaps unwind in the evening with a glass of your favorite libation, sitting with friends and family on the expansive, westward facing deck at mid tree level, looking out at the lake, mountains, sunset and countless stars. Gentle cool breezes wafting through the trees and the sounds of the crickets have caressed many into a relaxed trance. Wind your way down to the stone amphitheater with its large fire-pit near the shore for storytelling and s’mores. Early risers can start the day by sitting with a cup of coffee on the 16’x20’ dock (stretching 50ft out into the lake), often shrouded in the typical summer morning fog, listening to the sounds of the ducks, geese and jumping fish. If you feel like being active, you can swim or float off the end of the deep-water dock or rent a pontoon, ski boat, jet ski or canoe from the marina a mile away. nThis 5400 sq. ft., 5-bedroom/5 c2bd bath home on three levels is very ample for 12 to comfortably stay here. The exterior use of natural materials especially the poplar bark siding and extensive stonework, allows this house to almost disappear into its beautiful wooded setting. Liberal interior use of hickory paneling, pine floors, beautiful stone fireplaces and laurel railing, as well as selected rustic and antique furnishings lend to the phrase “rustic elegance” that aptly describes this home. nA spacious chef’s kitchen with counter seating, fully stocked with virtually every amenity and appliance, awaits you and will surely be a gathering point for lively conversation and gourmet cooking. The table in the beautiful dining room easily seats 8 and can accommodate up to 10 people (additional seating nearby). Should you decide to eat al fresco, the ample dining area on the covered porch provides a wonderful ambiance. The master suite features its own private deck with incredible vistas, satellite TV and a large walk-in closet. The master bath boasts double vanities made with antique Canadian pine countertops and a large shower with dual heads. All the bedrooms are spacious with comfortable beds and magnificent views of the lake, each has its own elegantly appointed bathroom with granite counters. The two upstairs bedrooms have a bonus window bed perfect for reading (or a nap!) The lower level, a perfect area for the kids to be away from the adults, has two bedrooms one with a bunk bed and two twin beds. The entertainment area downstairs features a ping-pong table, large screen TV with surround sound, satellite TV, DVD with video library, x-box, game table and a bar area with a microwave, sink and refrigerator. This level also has a fully stocked laundry room with a large washer and dryer. A smaller deck off the lower level with porch swing below creates more potential private spaces. nBeautiful mountain hikes with breathtaking vistas, waterfalls, shopping, antiquing, golf and dining in nearby Cashiers or Highlands allow one to indulge in other pastimes. Located conveniently on the eastern side of the lake making getting to most attractions much more convenient. But most will find they just want to sit on the deck and soak in the in breathtaking beauty here! nNo Smoking, No Pets. nOff-season rates are discounted 15%. Weekly: $5770, Short Stay: $1185 per night (3 night minimum). news/703/228670/ frameborder=0 width=425 height=327 style=margin:0,padding:0,border:0,overflow:hidde nn, scrolling=0>... more info >>

Description:Twickenham is named for a a quaint village on the Thames nestled between Richmond and Wimbledon where the character and charm of England flourishes. The owners fell in love with the people and the area of Twickenham while on their honeymoon about 20 years ago. Their favorite dining spot was a small pub located in a cellar next to Mick Jagger’s apartment where the young Rolling Stones spent a lot of time before they became famous. As they toured the area and explored the grand old manors and castles, their love for one another grew in their hearts as the scale and form of the architecture and beautiful furnishings and fixtures became etched upon their minds . Years later when their dream of building their own family home was becoming a reality, they decided to model this home after the style and character of the grand homes discovered while on their honeymoon. And thus after several years of planning and construction and exciting shopping trips to England, Twickenham House was completed. The current original owners raised their four children in this home, and through the years the walls and wonderful grounds have seen much love and laughter shared between friends and family. Their hope is that you too will come to Twickenham House with your family and friends and enjoy the peaceful and loving atmosphere as much as they have. This beautiful and extremely well-equipped mountain estate home, with 11,000 square feet of living space on 4 levels and 560 acres of beautiful land leading up to and encompassing the peak of Phoenix Mountain, represents the finest in private mountain living! When you pass through the first iron gate onto the property, you will see a trout-stocked pond and cascading waterfalls in a park-like setting, and you will know that you have arrived at your own private mountain resort! The grounds are perfectly maintained, and the paved driveway is over a mile long. It guides you from an elevation of 3375 feet above sea level at the main gate through a second iron gate at the main house at an elevation of 4325 feet. After parking in the circular drive, enter the main entrance and step into the large open foyer where the grand staircase rises below 2 majestic chandeliers to the 3rd level. Through the foyer and to the left is the large living room with a wood-burning fireplace (firewood provided), 46-Inch Satellite Flat Panel TV, plenty of comfortable seating, a card table, and French doors leading to the terrace. From the living room, step into the beautiful dining room with table for 8 and with built-in china cabinet with dinnerware and flatware for up to 30 guests, and French doors to the terrace. Pass through a small corridor into the huge kitchen with commercial grade double-sized refrigerator, separate freezer, a 6-burner gas cook top, double electric ovens, 2 dishwashers, a fireplace with a wood-fired oven, a dining table with seating for 6, swinging doors to the foyer, a French door to the terrace, a French door to the conservatory with another table for dining that seats 4. From the main entrance through the foyer to the right are 2 sets of French doors into the billiards room with pool table, a dartboard, a 40-inch flat panel satellite TV, a desk with an iMac, a handsome stone wood-burning fireplace, and a library of books. Down the hall from the billiards room and to the left is a bathroom with shower, the conservatory with an indoor Endless Pool Swim Spa that can be used as a hot tub, or swimming pool with a constant flow of water so that swimmers can swim against the current. With 180 degrees of windows, this conservatory is also a bright gathering place to enjoy the beautiful sunsets and wonderful outdoor sights any time of year. From here step out through French doors onto the well-furnished terrace to the outdoor hot tub and outdoor fireplace. At the end of the main hallway is the door to the 2-car garage, and just before that is the second staircase that leads upwards to the bedroom levels and downward to the entertainment areas which include a 600-square foot home theater with 12 leather recliners plus 4 additional seats, a popcorn maker, an 8-person sauna, an 8-person steam shower, an exercise room, a bathroom with shower and changing room, a large playroom with an abundance of toys for young children as well as a kitchenette, and a laundry room with 3 pairs of front-loading washers and dryers. The flooring of both the main level and 3rd level are of maple peg and groove oak, and all bathrooms are tiled. The ceilings are 9 and 10 feet throughout the home. Upstairs on the 3rd level are 5 suites all with peg and groove oak floors . At the west end is the huge Versace suite - named for the 2 Versace area rugs covering parts of the floor. This 900 square foot suite includes, a king bed, an armoire, plenty of seating as well as a gathering table, a 40-inch flat panel satellite TV with DVD player, a bathroom with large shower and heated towel rack, and 6 large windows through which to take in the beautiful outdoor scenery including spectacular sunsets. Follow the driveway just a 10-minute walk or 2-minute drive past the main house to where it ends just a few steps from the peak of Phoenix Mountain at 4500 feet. This is an incredible area to explore and sit on the rock outcroppings to take in the full 360 degrees of breath-taking mountain views. This is also reportedly the most important site in the world for viewing the rare and endangered wildflower know as Geum Radiatum, or spreading avens. Twickenham is located just 10 minutes from the shops and restaurants of Jefferson and is convenient to many High Country attractions including 15 minutes from West Jefferson, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Mount Jefferson State Park, 45 minutes from Boone and ASU, 50 minutes from Blowing Rock, Appalachian Ski Mountain, and Tweetsie Railroad, and less than an hour to Hawksnest Snow Tubing and Zipline and Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, and just 75 minutes to Ski Beech.
