Description:Sitting high on a 15-hectare wooded hill overlooking the Gulf of Follonica, Vedetta's bold cinnabar facade enlivens even a blue sky and looks forever out to sea. This is a place to come to breathe deeply, for there are distant panoramas and delightful details, but it is also a place to come to be pampered. The owner has applied a strong taste of good quality Italian design and grace notes of wit and whimsy to a house that has been in the family for generations, and has created a residence where it is easy to do just what you like in complete comfort. Choose the pillows you like, the music you prefer on the iPod provided you, or what time you wish the chef to arrive to teach you the secrets of Italian cooking, and the charming property manager will help make it all possible. nA short drive through the gates and up past olive groves and holm oak woods brings you to the three-storey villa that will seem smaller than it actually is. Under the chestnut beams of the wide wrap-around porch furnished with stylish outdoor armchairs, the main entrance is through glass doors into a large living/dining hall. The original features of what was once a stable are still to be seen: the long manger, stone walls and the terracotta ceiling, yet the striking plank floor and comfortable sofas, armchairs and table which can seat 14 make its modern use very clear. At one end of the room frosted glass doors lead to a well-equipped kitchen with dishwasher, at the other, a short hallway leads to a study and a large bedroom with a private furnished patio with views to the picturesque village of Scarlino across the valley. Each of the bedrooms in Vedetta are named after a family ancestor, whose portrait hangs large in the room and whose character or occupation in turn influences its decor. This ground-floor room, 'The Young Lady of Good Family' is the only one with a shower as well as bathtub and is suitable for guests with mobility problems. On the 1st floor are 'The Upstanding Maremman Gentleman' and 'The Flirtatious Libertine', both of which have long furnished balconies with views to the sea. While the former is done in earth browns that befit the land, the latter is, of course, decked with deep wine red, soft leather, well-rounded furniture and a bathtub with picture windows. Also on this floor, 'The Fickle Prima Donna' has a charming sitting area with chaise lounge and armchair that look out to Scarlino. The final two bedrooms, 'The Unstoppable Explorer' and 'The Poliedric Artist', are both under the slanting eaves of the 2nd floor but nonetheless large and as distinctively furnished as the others. All of the bedrooms have king-size beds and a sofa to suit their personality. Each of the ensuite bathrooms features the earth-toned natural stone of the area, with hand-hewn sinks, tiled bathtubs and plush robes. Additional accommodation is available in the bedroom suite in the stone cottage to the side of the outdoor bread oven. nDespite the great comfort in the house, there are many reasons to step outside. The warm Tuscan weather and gentle coastal breezes argue for outdoor dining and the call of the swimming pool set in the hillside with views to the sea would be difficult to ignore. While there are walks to take around the grounds or even archery practice easily arranged, should you come down off the hill there are many more things to do. Sandy beaches and water sports, an 18-hole golf course, famous wineries, and Etruscan archeological sites are all easily-reached destinations, as are the charming towns of Massa Marittima and Castiglione della Pescaia. And you could even hop a ferry for Elba and see where Napoleon languished in exile, only to be very happy to return to your own seaview retreat and think how much nicer it is to be a traveller than a displaced monarch.... more info >>
