Description:The house retains its original structure, with decorative floors of hand-made ceramic tiles in the bedrooms and bathrooms, terracotta tiles in the kitchens, and travertine marble floors in the living and dining rooms. The doors are 18th century Venetian, the chandeliers and furniture are antique and fit the style of the home adding charm as well as comfort. The thick walls keep the house cool in Summer and retain heat in Winter. There are six original marble fireplaces, as well as a bread oven and a barbecue outside. The Roman Villa had its own private baths in the grounds. Remains of the Roman baths are now visible as archaeological ruins in the upper garden, I Ruderi , where you can spot lovely Roman cats owned by the family. In the 19th century the Villa became the hunting lodge of a Cardinal (hence its name, Il Cardinale) after having been rebuilt and refurbished substantially since the 16th C. The coat of arms of the Torlonia family can still be seen in the villa. On the ground floor the living room, the dining room and the kitchen are spacious, impressive and elegant. Each room has its own fireplace and traditional features such as original Bohemian Chrystal chandeliers, travertine marble floors, hand crafted terracotta tiles, and ancient roman marble decorations. A large cellar with a walk-in larder adjoins the kitchen. Two bathrooms with showers are also downstairs. A utility room, with its own bathroom and separate entrance, can be used as a spare room for an au-pair or maid. A portico and a patio with a barbecue and enough garden furniture to cater for a large party are conveniently situated just outside the dining room. The ground floor of the Villa is for the use of all our guests, and meals can be served in the dining room, kitchen, under the portico or in the patio as well as in various areas of the garden. There are three areas of the Villa that can be rented separately or in combination. These are: Cardinale Suite, Apartment and the Cottage. The Cardinale Suite includes a very spacious master bedroom with a marble fireplace, hand painted ceramic tiles, an elegant en-suite bathroom with Jacuzzi and shower, a dressing room with built-in wardrobes, and a terrace, ideal for private sunbathing, breakfast or evening drinks. From the master bedroom it is possible to access to the lower part of the house directly. Cardinale sleeps 2/4: a couple in the master bedroom, a child or baby also in the main bedroom and/or dressing room, an au-pair or maid can be accommodated in the spare bedroom on the ground floor. The Apartment has its own entrance and access to a private section of the garden. It has two bedrooms with four beds and a bathroom with a shower. Built-in wardrobes and a lobby provide abundant storage space. Apartment can be connected to the master bedroom via the dressing room. In this way the Cardinale Suite and the Apartment, rented together, make an ideal suite for families. Guests who might wish to rent only the Apartment could still make use of the rooms on the ground floor. The Apartment sleeps four people. The Apartment can be connected to the master bedroom via the dressing room. In this way the Cardinale Suite and the Apartment, rented together, make an ideal suite for families. The Cottage in the upper part of the garden is beautifully arranged so as to offer totally separate accommodation ideal for a couple. It comprises a double bedroom, a bathroom with a large shower, a living/dining room and a kitchen area, with a marble sink and a fireplace. The Cottage is a peaceful retreat, complete with its own stereo and wireless Internet connection. The cottage sleeps two (or three, extra single airbed available). There is another wing of the Villa that is currently occupied by the owner and the housekeeper. This can also be rented together with the rest of the Villa upon request for long periods (minimum 6 months). The whole Villa sleeps 14 people. Villa Il Cardinale is surrounded by a beautiful garden with secular trees and scented plants. The garden is on two levels and is arranged in such a way as to offer varied and secluded areas. There are fruit trees, and vines, and there is a vegetable garden that provides fresh seasonal produce. The garden furniture can seat more than forty people. The temperate Roman climate allows for eating outdoors from March until November. The upper garden can be accessed from a separate gate in the front of the Villa.... more info >>
