Description:The Casale Sonnino, located 40 minutes from the city center, sits on a hilltop that once belonged to the Roman Senator Caius Julius Cornutus Tertullus in 100 AD. Traces of his ancient residence such as fragments of columns and walls have emerged from the soil and now enhance the ambiance of the garden. The cistern of the ancient villa lies in the Casale's basement which also features a Roman well, Roman arches and a system of caves dating back to at least the 12th Century. Over the years, these caves have been used for storing wine, growing mushrooms and even for a scene in an Italian feature film. Make sure you ask for a tour when you visit the Casale! n nThe design of the Villa itself is long and narrow with two staircases rather than a central one - this is typical of late 17th and 18th Century Roman country houses. The building was renovated from a rustic farmhouse to an elegant family home in 1948 by our grandparents and the three bathrooms were updated in the 1990's by our mother. Upstairs, there are four bedrooms and two bathrooms and a large terrace with 180 degree views stretching from Rome to the Apennine Mountains. Here, our guests like to sit outside with their favorite beverage or play ping pong while watching the stars twinkle over the eternal city. New Years Eve, with fireworks popping up all over, is a sight to behold! The property, which includes a 3,000m2 garden, olive grove and walnut orchard, is fenced with an automatic gate. Each apartment has access to the garden and garden furniture.
