Description:Around 1200 AD the district around Todi and Orvieto was subject to much contention and turbulence. Numerous castles bear witness to the need for defence and protection of assets. One such was the Tower of Orlando, near Baschi. Originating around 1250, it is now one of the most beautiful and best conserved private castles in Umbria. Carefully restructured, this impressive castle is a high quality home to its Roman owner, who is occasionally in residence in a completely separate part of the castle. As befitting a castle, the architects have maintained the harsh, original, stone structure, and have made sensitive use of stone, iron and wood to create a blend of comfortable contemporary details with the existing historic structure. The upper floors and tower have wide metal railings easy for a child to slip through. nOn the ground floor there is a long furnished pergola enjoying panoramic views, which has direct access to the spacious drawing room with a fireplace and the dining room for 14. The well-equipped kitchen also has direct access to the gardens. On the first floor are a double bedroom and a twin bedroom, each with a sitting area and bathroom. On the second floor there is a twin bedroom, with a bathroom. Each suite is different from the other, and valuable contemporary paintings decorate the walls. An external walkway running round the walls high up in the courtyard leads to the top of the tower, where there is sitting room, a bathroom and a large gallery with a double bed. nWith a separate entrance you enter the lovely West Wing, a simpler apartment with a comfortable sitting room with fireplace, a kitchenette, a twin bedroom, a single bedroom and a bathroom. nAround Castell'Orlando nOutside there are furnished terraces, sloping green lawns, and rows of silent cypresses hosting the panoramic views. The excellent swimming pool, covered terrace and changing rooms are set just below the side of the main wing. The whole property, with its pool, fenced deer and horse pastures, superbly manicured park and gardens, and discreet and efficient staff achieves a prestigious whole. There are two small villages within 1 km. of the castle for simple shopping, and Todi, 15 kms. away, is a beautiful hill town, in a panoramic position dominating the Tiber valley. With an illustrious and interesting history from Etruscan origins, through Roman dominance to a free Commune in the 12th Century, Todi's tortuous, narrow, winding streets, with arches, wells and unexpected glimpses of the surrounding hills, create an evocative medieval atmosphere. Orvieto, built on sharp-sided tufo hill has a beautiful, golden late Romanesque - Gothic cathedral with works by Signorelli, Orcagna, Andrea and Nino Pisano. The famous S. Patrizio's well is 13 metres wide and has a helix staircase which allowed mules to go up and own without crossing. During the year many religious and lay festivals, operas and concerts are organised in this area including the Spoleto Festival of the Two Worlds. Though actually adjoined to one side to a neighbouring home, privacy is assured thanks to the long high walls of greenery and a vast olive grove that encircle the fenced garden. And it is in garden side that visitors will often gather, be it to eat out under the furnished vine-covered pergola, stretch out on the desk surrounding the pool or venture down the garden for more active pastimes. Here lavender, oleander and roses complement tall holm oaks and silvery olive trees and the wide green lawns that stretch throughout the garden invite barefoot wandering. This outdoor paradise is easily accessed though doors leading from the living room, the dining room and a lovely independent ensuite double bedroom. r nThe front approach to the house is from the shade of tall Mediterranean 'umbrella' pines and through doors off the tufo stone terrace.
