As a desirable vacation destination, Fort Myers and its neighboring cities attract thousands of visitors annually. Much remains as it was hundreds of years ago, serene and unspoiled. Mangrove forests, saltwater wetlands, wildlife refuges, tropical gardens, nature trails, miles of winding canals and waterways, and hundreds of islands, some inhabited, some not, provide a magical retreat from the fast-paced world. Fort Myers Located on the southern bank of the Caloosahatchee River and known as the “City of Palms”, Fort Myers is rich in history, Civil War settlement, and Seminole Indian legacies. The wide Caloosahatchee River diagonally divides the city from Cape Coral to the west, and North Fort Myers just across the Edison Bridge. You'll never be bored here. Cultural attractions like the Imaginarium and the Arcade Theatre mix with beach activities. The annual Edison Festival of Light unites everyone in the city for a citywide celebration. Fort Myers is also the winter home of the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins. Cape Coral Northwest of Fort Myers, Cape Coral was originally laid out to resemble the Venice of Italy on the Gulf of Mexico. The man-made canal systems were instrumental in its residential and commercial growth and expansion. There are many popular outdoor attractions here, such as the Sun Splash Family Waterpark. With more than 30 parks, there are also numerous boardwalks and trails for visitors to explore. The Children's Science Center and the Cape Coral Historical Society Museum provide an educational respite. Sanibel Island Southwest of Fort Myers is the popular island of Sanibel, 12 miles long and 5 miles wide, connected at a narrow point. With a reputation for great fishing, windsurfing, shell collecting, bird watching and other outdoor pursuits, the best way to get around the island is by bicycle. Visit the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum and the Sanibel Gallery. Golf and tennis are available at the Dunes Golf and Tennis Club on the eastern end of the island, the Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa . The J. N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, is a must-see. Captiva Island Upper Captiva, at the northern end of Sanibel Island, is about 4.5 miles long and a half mile wide. It is mostly a wildlife sanctuary and the perfect place to go for seclusion and privacy. This barrier island is a great place to view dolphins, birds, and beautiful sunsets. Fort Myers Beach Fifteen minutes south of Fort Myers along the Gulf coast is Fort Myers Beach. A popular retreat for vacationers with many quaint restaurants like Channel Mark Restaurant and unique hotels like Pointe Estero Beach Resort, it offers charter fishing, cruises and tours to neighboring islands or all the way to Key West. POINTS OF INTEREST in SARASOTA County: Our other VACATION RENTAL Condo in ENGLEWOOD, FL is not far away from the miracle healing waters of WARM MINERAL SPRINGS in NORTH PORT, FL - about 15-20 min drive. It is the second biggest warm water mineral spring in the western hemisphere. The legal classification of a mineral spring varies in different parts of the world but it is generally accepted that it must contain greater than 100 PPM (parts per million) of naturally dissolved solids. Warm Mineral Springs water contains a total of 17,349 ppm of minerals, including magnesium, silica, sulfate, chloride, sodium, carbon dioxide, potassium, and bicarbonate, among others, making it the highest in the U.S. and the third highest in the world. Warm Mineral Springs also has a steady pH of 7.3. Soaking in or drinking the water is believed to help alkalize bathers’ blood chemistry. A full array of spa services are also available on site, including massage, acupuncture, facials, reflexology, Reiki healing, detoxifying body wraps, ion cleansing, ear candling, paraffin dips, and body waxing. Although the facilities are a bit dilapidated, the springs are definitely worth a visit. The cost is $20 per day for adults and $8 per day for children under 12 ($18 with AAA discount or $14 for students). A10-day pass is also available for $150. Warm Mineral Springs is open every day, weather permitting, from 9 am to 5 pm. While most tourists head for Florida’s gorgeous beaches, others come to soak in the healing waters of Warm Mineral Springs, which many believe to be the fabled Fountain of Youth sought by Ponce de Leon. During the ice age, Warm Mineral Springs was an underground cave with a lake at the bottom. As glaciers receded and the ice caps melted, the water level rose. Eventually the ground over the cave collapsed, exposing the lake. Over the years, divers exploring this sinkhole have discovered 11,000-year-old remains of prehistoric hunters, saber tooth tigers, a giant sloth, and camels, proving that the cave was once above water. Today the spring is an hourglass shaped geological feature that is 230 feet deep. More than 9 million gallons of warm water flow into the springs each day from a 3000-foot deep aquifer, keeping the water at constant 87 degrees F year round. This water contains 51 healing minerals! Proponents of Balneotherapy – the treatment of disease by bathing – believe that the minerals in spring waters can be absorbed through the skin. More than 65,000 people travel from all over the world every year to immerse themselves in these waters, purported to cure or alleviate ailments that include arthritis, skin conditions, fibromyalgia, stress, pain, and muscular problems. Even those who come to the springs with no ailments claim to emerge from the water feeling better and with glowing skin. There are mostly European visitors there - very health conscious people! Water pleasantly warm and SALTY, more then ocean! Easy to float and swim because of saltiness of water. There is a slight odor of sulfur, but after a view minutes you don’t notice it anymore. Skin becomes so smooth and silky after swimming in this miracle lake and you feel tranquility, happiness, lightness after soaking. People watching is great. Everyone has large hats, glasses with sun nose protectors, hydro-gyro class is included with admission so take advantage of it. People walk in circles around the lake…bring clogs so you do not step on rocks. If you aren’t a good swimmer bring a noodle as it is over 200 ft deep in center but they do have low areas marked off. Every one is friendly and glad to share their stories. Low key resort with a lot of tranquility. Very relaxing and healing. Nice escape from hustle and bustle of every day life. I highly recommend to visit this place to experience it yourself. WARM MINERAL SPRINGS Location: situated approximately halfway between Ft. Myers and Sarasota. Take Exit 34 on I-75 to U.S. 41, then left for 3 miles on San Servando Ave. This site is now a commercial bathing spa advertised as a relief for conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism and skin disorders. Apparently people think the minerals, consisting of high amounts of minerals including chloride, sodium, sulphate, magnesium, potassium, bicarbonate, and calcium, give fountain of youth qualities. Those that drink the water quickly find that the minerals also work as a swift laxative. SCUBA diving is not permitted at this site. Swimmers must stay within the shallow area the is roped off. The web site for Warm Mineral Springs can be found here: Read and view more: http://attractions.uptake.com/blog/warm-mineral-springs-north-port-florida-2447.html#ixzz1csdTsOYb WARM MINERAL SPRINGS. If you like European food (deli) you can visit the specialty stores in nearby North Port: 1) Premier European Food ( 13655 Tamiami Trl, North Port, FL34287 2) International Food ( 13201 Tamiami Trl, North Port, FL34287. ENGLEWOOD's ATTRACTIONS:: Englewood, Fla. – Four natural beaches, world-class fishing, unusual boutiques, and ample golfing are some of the reasons luring visitors to Englewood so it is no surprise the town has been listed as the number two destination to visit in 2009 by TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel community. Leave your stress behind and immerse yourself in unparalleled relaxation at Englewood. The area offers a wide range of recreational activities that come with miles of unspoiled beach, world-class fishing, power boating, canoeing, kayaking and sailing. Additionally, you will find numerous golf courses and tennis clubs, as well as arts and entertainment to suit any taste. With Sarasota and Tampa an easy trip to the North, and Fort Myers and Naples to the South, the Englewood area enjoys the enviable position of blending the excitement of a major metropolitan area with the laid-back atmosphere of its rural roots. In a very real sense Englewood offers a quiet unspoiled way of life that its residents, seasonal neighbors and vacationers have come to cherish. Englewood is the only town in Florida I know that resides in two counties – Sarasota and Charlotte County. The area was settled in the late 1800s. The town remained agricultural until the 1940s, since the Tamiami Trail passed east of the peninsula. For you history buffs, the house that was once the winter home for Ohio State professor Edward Sommermeir can give you feelings of those bygone days. Today, Dearborn Avenue offers quaint village shops for that special find, a place for brunch, and somewhere to get groceries. Englewood is on the lower Gulf Coast of Florida, about 85 miles south of Tampa. It is one of a number of small towns and cities on the CAPE HAZE PENINSULA. Just across Lemon Bay from the old downtown Englewood, is Englewood Beach on the Gulf of Mexico. Englewood Beach is located on Manasota Key, a small barrier island. The southern half of the key is in Charlotte County and the northern part is in Sarasota County. There are FOUR very good PUBLIC BEACH AREAS on Manasota Key. At the north end of Manasota Key is Blind Pass Beach Park in Sarasota County. South from there, but still in Charlotte County, is Manasota Beach. Manasota Beach (maps..com), Englewood Beach at Chadwick Park, just off the bridge at the south access point, is the most popular and built up. Stump Pass Beach State Park is in a natural setting. There are several local restaurants with good fare but for fine dining one might make the trip to Venice or Sarasota. Local artisans are in abundance and a variety of products may be purchased. Of course, fishing and boating, cruises and charters can be found everywhere. Night life is limited. Using Englewood as your base, explore SARASOTA COUNTY. I would recommend making a day trip to Venice, a charming seaside town 20 minutes away by car. Venice’s historic district is filled with amazing Mediterranean revival and Northern Italian-style buildings, charming antiques stores, and good restaurants. One of the best-known events in Venice is the annual Shark's Tooth Festival. This colorful event, which celebrates the area's natural bounty of fossilized sharks’ teeth, is held every spring at the beach near the Venice Pier. The festival features live entertainment, educational booths, fossil vendors, of course, more than 100 artists from around the State, and great food! The festival showcases shark teeth, shark jaws, stingray spine fragments, stingray teeth, alligator teeth, sea biscuits, and more. But you can collect the teeth yourself by combing a beach of your choice (it’s free and will keep you occupied). The teeth you are looking for are from sharks extinct for millions of years. Sharks which have died sink to the Gulf of Mexico floor. Over time, the cartilage of their bodies disintegrates. Eventually some of the teeth are washed up on shore with tides. Combing these shores to look for the dark gems has always been a favorite pastime of visitors and residents here because these teeth make great collectibles. The teeth range in size from one-eighth inch to three inches and may be black, brown, or gray, depending on the type of minerals, deposits, and vegetation in the soil in which they have been buried. To start your own collection, you have to take a walk along the shore and hopefully discover sharks' teeth, for which the beach is famous countrywide. - Stump Pass Beach State Park is #1 attraction in Englewood The main attraction at this park is the beach and the fact that it has a large amount of sharks teeth just waiting to be found. What makes this beach different are the sharks teeth which are washed up on shore. Many locals walk along the shore line collecting sharks teeth. Most of the teeth are small and black and shaped like a Y, however occasionally you will find a really large one, which is a lovely keepsake of the area! They are usually black because they're so old, but sometimes you can find new teeth that are more gray towards the tip. On occasion, if you are there enough and do enough digging, you can uncover some real monster teeth. These are from the ancient Megladon sharks and can be worth a lot of money depending on the size and condition. It only costs $3 for an all-day park pass versus the 75 cents per hour at Englewood Beach just down the road and it shouldn't be hard to fund a spot as most of the tourism happens farther North up at Siesta Key. Great place to fish, lay on the beach and snorkel. Plus you can leave and come back to watch sunset for no extra cost! Overall, real nice place to go and relax on the beach, swim, eat some lunch, and search for sharks teeth for the day. Best value boat rental I found was at Royal Palm Marina where Mike gave us a crash course in watercraft as we'd never boated before, luckily we didn't crash and all was well. If you like quieter beaches then this is certainly one to visit. - Lemon Bay Tours Do you know why Englewood, Florida isthe Gem of the Florida Gulf Coast? Have you seen the beauty of Lemon Bay? Description:Ideal for a large family gathering or reunion, this charming beach house for ten can be easily rented in conjunction with its next-door-neighbor-but-one, Baycrest II, and/or the elegant Laguna Mansion one block away. Could these homes be your perfect beach wedding solution? With a brand new heated pool and enviable location (1 block to Roberts Bay, 3 blocks to downtown Venice and only 5 blocks to Venice Beach), there’s plenty to write home about - if you can be bothered. Quite likely, you’ll be too busy hunting sharks’ teeth, spotting dolphins and window shopping in Old Venice. The charms of this locale are many, and reward repeat visits. Old Venice is a distinct town with real character and stands out from all others along the coast. Italian-style architecture dates to the early 1920s and street names pay homage to the town’s influences: stroll down Via Venezia, San Marco and Firenze, for example. Wander along Main Street and browse to your heart’s content in shops, restaurants and little boutiques. Enjoy the best in al fresco dining at charming sidewalk cafes. Along the way, admire huge oaks are draped in Spanish moss. This town is absolutely charming. As is this Baycrest home. A brand new heated pool and surrounding patio are enclosed in a gorgeous screened lanai. Treat yourself to Terrazzo tile floors and many further indulgences. Tropical accents dot the walls throughout the house. Wireless and cable high-speed Internet are added conveniences. New furniture in the living room is of particularly high quality. Large coffee and side tables are great for holding snacks or cooling drinks, and everyone will fight over the leather recliner chairs and matching foot stools. They’re sublime. When you choose to dine at home, the dining room is a further option (in addition to outside patio table and barbecue). Opening directly to the kitchen, it’s an ideal spot in which to plan your day together, catch up on email or enjoy a bite of toast. The home’s three bedrooms include a king bed in the master suite, with two twins and two queens in the guest rooms. Enjoy brand new furniture throughout. Two further guests will sleep comfortably in the sunroom on an oversized sleeper sofa. All of the bedrooms are spacious and have large closets. Of the two bathrooms, one has a bath/shower combo and the other a handsome tiled shower stall. Look out for ‘snow birds’ as you walk to the beach. Parrots visit Venice and surrounds during the winter, and are often found nesting in palm trees along the shore. Our Baycrest house is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Venice Island near Roberts Bay. Our house is on a small side street at 433 Baycrest Drive and is just 5 blocks to the Venice Beach and 3 blocks to downtown Venice. We just added a beautiful pool and enclosed patio and lanai. Location, Location, Location! The Baycrest House is only a 5 block walk to the Venice Beach and a few minutes more to the Crow's Nest seafood restaurant where you can enjoy live music at night and watch the sunset. If you have a dog, it is a nice walk or short car ride to Venice's famous dog beach - Brohard Paw Park. Also, the beach home is about 3 blocks to Venice Avenue and downtown Venice Florida. Here you will find shops, boutiques, cafes and even tennis courts and recreation area.... more info >>
