Set on a hillside overlooking the River Pesa valley, it is just 15 minutes from Florence in the heart of the Chianti region. The views from the property are simply stunning and it will be hard for guests to drag themselves away from the peace and tranquility that the setting offers. However, you are also ideally placed to explore the wider Tuscan region, just 18 km from Florence, 60 km from Siena. Originally a Medieval feudal castle, the property was converted to a villa between 1450 and 1500. As you would expect, it is steeped in history and is a fascinating place to spend a holiday in this wonderful part of Tuscany. The property is divided into two main sections - The Conventino and Torre - with a large central hall between the two. Within the Conventino, there is a master bedroom suite with both living area and ensuite bathrooms. In addition, there are 5 further double bedrooms and 2 single bedrooms in this part of the property. Three of the double bedrooms also have their own ensuite bathrooms whilst the remaining bedrooms share 2 bathrooms between them. There is a small living room in this part of the villa. Description:This old castello was built at the beginning of the 16th century, and was once the residence of the Grand Duke Leopoldo II of Tuscany. It has now for many years been the property of the Merciai family, who have in time transformed the castello into an elegant home where guests can spend an unforgettable holiday. Castello di Magona has kept intact all of its precious furnishings, and the bedrooms have been personalized with individual wallpapering of different colours and equipped with modern bathrooms. The majestic salons on the ground floor contain many of the paintings that belonged to the Grand Duke. In recent years many members of the international nobility have stayed there and have been able to appreciate the hospitality of the owners of the house and the efficiency of the personnel at the service of its guests. In the large grounds you look onto the hill of olive trees in the direction of the nearby Elba island, and there is also a large swimming-pool with patios at the side and a bar area furnished for relaxation and a garden with splendid roses and tall trees. A farming estate of 250 acres, it is situated on part of the ancient pilgrim's road to Rome, Via Francigena, and provides a sense of being far the rest of the world yet immersed in a territory rich in history and character. Home to hare, wild deer and pheasants, it is both hunting preserve as well as a place to relax, where the opportunity to hike, lie by the pool with a good book or explore the local culture provides a holiday to suit everyone. nThe three hilltop buildings that comprise the estate are perfectly integrated among the trees and abundant greenery. In one of the houses live the housekeeper and his family, they both look after guests during their stay and work in the fields on the estate and large organic vegetable gardens, where guests are invited to help themselves to the delicious seasonal produce. The main villa, with entrances on two sides, is divided into two large apartments that can also be rented as a whole. In the third building there is an apartment that the owner uses occasionally at the weekend and another large apartment for guests. All the interiors are decorated in authentic Tuscan Style, with original furniture in wrought iron and chestnut and a touch of welcoming colours in the precious tapestries and carpets. nAll guests share the large pool, located 50 meters from the villa, sheltered from winds yet exposed all day to the sun. The large garden around the pool offers a privileged viewpoint from which you can contemplate the Tuscan countryside and savour the serenity it offers. For this reason the owner decided to build just here a large wooden platform, the perfect spot for dinners and barbecues. Near the swimming pool there are also a gazebo and small wooden house with bathroom, shower and a fridge. nSix kilometres away lies the medieval town of San Miniato, birthplace of Matilde di Canossa and Francesco Sforza and famous for its truffles, which we recommend you taste during the Feast of the Truffles in November. In the surroundings there are some true jewels of history and architecture to discover. Montaione has a small historical centre well known for its craftsmanship, ancient neighboring villas and a remarkable number of organic farms. Certaldo, the birthplace of Giovanni Boccaccio, has a very fascinating well-preserved medieval castle and a thriving cultural centre, home of the theatre and music street festival, the Mercantia. Only slightly farther down the road are Volterra, San Gimignano and Monteriggioni.
