Remember that it would be completely doable to explore Portland by foot and/or bike...there is no need for a car unless you want to further your adventure to the many other interesting places within reasonable driving distance. For example, Freeport, Maine, offers the super bowl of factory store shopping...just a 20 minute ride north. You may be familiar with LL Bean, J Crew, Gap, Northface, Brooks Brothers, Cole Hahn, Reebok, to name only a few... .
