At the cottage enjoy the sunny open deck or shady covered porch, spacious kitchen, and comfortable living room. Fully furnished, Sleeps 4, 2 Bedrooms with linens (1st bedroom - queen size bed, 2nd bedroom - full size futon), 1 bath with towels, washer/dryer, iron & ironing board, dining table seats 6, outdoor gas grill, electric stove/oven, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and other basics needed for cooking all your meals. Also available while using the cottage: a TV/VCR/DVD, movies, wireless internet, books, radio with CD player, piano, and lots of family favorite games :-) Available within walking distance from the cottage, you will find a variety of restaurants, 10 at the latest count. All are either on the Main Street or a side street just off of Main. Fine Dining, Casual, Takeout, Grocery Store, Wine Store, and many other shops and galleries. VERY IMPORTANT: The island is accessed by the Maine State Ferry Service, which provides six ferries running round trip each day. You will be just a minute walk away from great eating...a gourmet deli (Aurora's), great brick oven pizza (Bonobo's) and fantastic European cusine at Caiola's Restaurant. You can enjoy great live music in a small venue just minutes away at One Longfellow Square and then there is the Portland Museum of Art down the street and around the corner. You can also be off on your bike and down the hill to ride the beautiful bike paths along Casco Bay. Visit the historic Old Port District .... you can walk or bike there. It has a wealth of great restaurants, cafes, bars, parks, and of course shopping and If you like fresh seafood you are in the right place to consume your fill of lobster, crabs, clams, shrimp, haddock and of course local oysters! You can go to local cinemas, see independent films, local theater, comedy clubs, chamber and classical music venues and of course the beach for swimming, kayaking, boating...! Truly something for everyone. Your vacation apartment is warm, welcoming and cozy with wide pumpkin pine floors and exposed chimneys. Located in the heart of the West End it is on a quiet dead end street where there is no passing traffic to disturb you. You look out to our courtyard and front garden. The kitchen is fully stocked. We provide teas/coffee/spices as well as all the basics you would need to cook at home. The bedrooms are simple and peaceful w/Queen size beds and duvets of goose down. We have many books for you to browse through and enjoy as well as a Sound System where you can dock your Ipod. Your apartment is located on the second floor and is one of three apartments. Your entry way is completely separate and private. There are two bikes with helmets and lock at your disposal. The airport (Portland International Jetport) is just a ten minute taxi ride away and the bus/train station is down the hill. You can fly into Boston's Logan Airport and take a bus to Portland (they leave every hour). Remember that it would be completely doable to explore Portland by foot and/or bike...there is no need for a car unless you want to further your adventure to the many other interesting places within reasonable driving distance. For example, Freeport, Maine, offers the super bowl of factory store shopping...just a 20 minute ride north. You may be familiar with LL Bean, J Crew, Gap, Northface, Brooks Brothers, Cole Hahn, Reebok, to name only a few... . One of few homes located with direct access to both the lighthouse (and the Whitehead cliffs) and northern trailheads (to Cathedral Woods, Blackhead, and Pebble Beach), it provides the ideal situation for a memorable stay. Fair Hill also sits adjacent to ice pond road and a 3-minute walk to Deadman's Cove for some of the most breathtaking sunsets and views from the island. The cottage itself is a quaint and authentic Monhegan original. The two bedroom, one bathroom home sleeps 7 comfortably (2 full beds, a single cot, and a small pull-out couch) with both bedrooms featuring partial ocean sunset views in the distance. The main floor features an eat-in kitchen with a gas stove/oven, refrigerator/freezer and basic cooking and dining necessities. Adjacent to the kitchen is a dining room boasting natural light (with table doubling as an art/project table) and pleasant views of ice pond road and neighboring cottages. The living room is centered around a cozy wood-burning fireplace with ample seating to curl up and read a book or relax after a long day of exploring. The outdoor area includes a spacious yard with a relaxing hammock and a front porch and back deck. About the island: Breathtaking Monhegan Island is located several miles off of mid-coast Maine and is only accessible by boat. It offers some of the most dramatic scenery and best birding on the east coast. The rocky island is about 1 1/4 miles long and 3/4 mile wide, and features 17 miles of hiking trails which lead through spruce forests out to the highest ocean cliffs on the Maine coastline. Most of the island is a privately managed nature preserve that will remain forever wild. As one of the country's foremost artists colonies, it is a highly sought after destination for those who come to paint the natural beauty of the island and the traditional fishing village. The island attractions feature a wonderful lighthouse and museum, several art galleries, coffee houses, restaurants, two general stores and gift shops. With a year round population of approximately 50 residents and no cars other than a few utility trucks used by residents, Monhegan thrives in spring, summer and autumn with a friendly community of artists, hikers, and visitors who wander the village and trails all by foot. Your host, Ted is an old hippie who is young at heart, who will share his eclectic home, warm hospitality, and ideas for a fun-filled island adventure. Enjoy bicycling or hiking around the island, exploring the rocky shore-line, relaxing on the beach and dining at local restaurants. Equipped with a kitchenette and half bathroom (shared full bath in main house), a ladder to the second floor, just a block from the beach, and a 20 minute ferry ride to Portland, you are guaranteed to have a memorable and rich stay here. Located next to an artist's creative, quirky, ever-evolving home/ work of art which is not fully completed. Kitchenette includes convection oven, toaster oven, hot plates, refrigerator and sink. Please note that the bedroom is on the second floor, the bed is a comfy fouton on the floor, and guests have to climb a ladder to get there. 2 guests preferred. If necessary to add one guest, $35.00 extra per night. 3 guests absolute maximum. Sorry NO PETS, no exceptions. You can either park your car for free at your own risk on the street in Portland, at the ferry terminal in Portland for $25.00/ day, or bring your car on the ferry (see below for rates). Description:At The Shore - Cape Elizabeth, a small coastal community on Casco Bay at the entrance to Portland Harbor, is a suburb of Maine's largest city, Portland. Cape Elizabeth (pop 8500) is a historic town, famous for its lighthouses, parks, and scenic vistas of Maine's legendary rocky coast. The town sits on a peninsula that juts 12 miles into the open sea, rimmed by craggy shores and sandy beaches. It marks the entrance to picturesque Casco Bay and provides oceanfront beaches, saltwater coves, grassy sand dunes and wooded areas that provides outdoor recreation such as swimming, fishing and boating, shelling, windsurfing, hiking, picnicking, sea kayaking and much more. Across the road from the delightful two bedroom apartment is your own Private Casino Beach (a short 0.2 mile walk down Cottage Lane) with Portland Headlight (the Nations first commissioned lighthouse and reportedly the nations most photographed) just 5 minutes up the road. A 5 mile drive over the Casco Bay Bridge will take you directly to downtown Portland and The Old Port with the Portland International Jetport being 8 miles away. LLBean is an easy 30 minute drive and Boston is approx 1 1/2 hour drive. Cape Elizabeth is host to an annual Labor Day Art Show. The annual Beach to Beacon road race is run every August. The two bedroom apartment is fully furnished with 2 good sized bedrooms with built in closets, 1.5 bathrooms, full size fridge and electric stove/oven, washer, dryer, A/C, 37 flat screen TV, DVD, CD player, basic cable, Internet with wifi, books, games, outdoor grill, outdoor seating, off street parking. Description:Our home is yours during our vacations abroad - we vacate leaving it professionally cleaned and fully equipped for your ease and comfort. It is a hundred year old home with airy rooms and modern design. We are located in a leafy neighborhood a block from Back Bay's walking and cycling trails, 2 miles to the heart of downtown Portland, across the street from an artisan bakery. Wifi, fireplace, washer/dryer and all amenities are included. Kitchen is fully equipped with many condiments, wine glasses, and all that is required for the serious cook. Kitchen appliances include JennAir gas oven/stove, Bosch dishwasher, and on the deck a Weber propane bbq. The yard is fenced, private, and shady. There is parking in the driveway for two vehicles. We've rented another of our homes for more than 15 years and are accustomed to catering to the discerning traveler.
