Description:Enjoy uninterrupted peace and quiet on the Maine coast in this rustic cabin perfect for artists, writers, or anyone else wanting to unplug and unwind for a few days or weeks. This charming cabin, built in 1982, is situated only 50 feet from the water's edge, and, with only one house visible through the woods, it is difficult to find a more private location than this. The cabin is of rustic design, with one private bedroom and single common area that includes a kitchenette, eat-in table, couch, and TV (no cable though). Above the common area is a loft with two twin bed mattresses, accessible by a wooden ladder. Off the common area is an enclosed composting toilet. There is no shower so all washing up must be done in the bath tub. There is no internet or telephone connection. Such simple living is certainly not for everyone, but can be a tremendous treat for those interested in enjoying this beautiful natural setting. The cabin looks over a salt river (Back River) which is part of the ocean but looks more like a river/lake due to the protection of Barter's Island across the water. The cove that the cabin sits on is tidal, which means that half the time you are looking at the ocean and half the time it is a natural mud flat. So the view changes every 6 hours! To enjoy the water to its fullest when the tide is up, a double kayak may be rented from the property owners at a very reasonable rate. The cabin is located 5 minutes drive from lovely Boothbay Harbor, a stunning destination for travelers of all kinds. Enjoy fine local seafood, kayaking, whale watching, sunset sailing trips, and the charming downtown with its quaint shops. There are also many beautiful walking trails through the Boothbay Region Land Trust, along with one of the world's finest botanical gardens at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, located only 2 miles from the cabin. Your entry way is completely separate and private. There are two bikes with helmets and lock at your disposal. The airport (Portland International Jetport) is just a ten minute taxi ride away and the bus/train station is down the hill. You can fly into Boston's Logan Airport and take a bus to Portland (they leave every hour). Remember that it would be completely doable to explore Portland by foot and/or bike...there is no need for a car unless you want to further your adventure to the many other interesting places within reasonable driving distance. For example, Freeport, Maine, offers the super bowl of factory store shopping...just a 20 minute ride north. You may be familiar with LL Bean, J Crew, Gap, Northface, Brooks Brothers, Cole Hahn, Reebok, to name only a few... . Description:Our house is nestled in the trees, across the road from the Hidden Valley Nature Center . The house is fully furnished and has an open floor plan with 2 bedrooms downstairs and a loft with a TV and futon, which can be used for a 3rd bedroom. There are 2 outbuildings the 'crib' has a separate screened sleeping porch downstairs, where we sleep, and a yoga studio/storage area upstairs. The other building is a wood-heated sauna. In the house there are 2 bathrooms (one w/ spa tub), 2 couches, appliances include a large upright freezer, washer and dryer, linens and towels original art is on the walls. Heat is provided by one propane stove in the middle of the house. Kitchen stove and water heater are also run on propane. The house is bright and the sunroom adds passive solar heat in the winter. There are 3 skylights. Water is from a drilled well and is sweet and cold. Perennial flower beds surround the house. Our neighborhood is a community of good, friendly folks, some of the best in Maine. And volleyball is big there are 2 regulation sand courts within walking distance. Playing starts as soon as mud season ends. Woods have miles of trails, great for walks, x-country skiing, snow shoeing. Closest neighbor is 1/8 of a mile away and cannot be seen from our house. Environs The coastal towns of Damariscotta and Wiscasset are 15 minutes away Gardiner is 20 minutes and August is 30 minutes. There are major shopping areas in all those places, but the best veggies are right across the road, at Hidden Valley (organic) Farm. Camden and Portland are an hour away in opposite directions. The Sheepscot River is 3 miles down the road, in the old village of Head Tide, a part of the town of Alna. When the tide is right a canoe or kayak (which is available for use) will take you out to the coast. Only non-smokers, please. If you stay there when we are away, the place sleeps 8.... more info >>
