Description:The house: 4000 sf, consisting of 4 BR, 3 Baths, Double LR, open kitchen, DR, Den, Library, Turret Loft, and Balcony. Plus large waterfront porch, flagstone patio, and spacious lawns. Recently renovated and nicely furnished. Huge wrap-around windows open up all of the downstairs living area to spectacular 180 degree water, island, and mountain views. All upstairs bedrooms have similar views. Lots of room to roam around or to find a quiet spot to read. n nThe Location: Upper Frenchman Bay, adjacent to historic summer resort village of Hancock Point with its Inn, Crafts period chapel, library, tennis courts, tiny post office, and wharf. n nFor Consideration: Although we are only 7 mi by water from Bar Harbor, the drive by car to Mount Desert Island is at least 30 minutes, to the Hulls Cove entrance to Acadia N.P. about 40 minutes, and at least 45 minutes to Bar Harbor itself. During the peak season, traffic may lengthen these times. On the other hand, major shopping in Ellsworth is only 20 minutes, and the Bangor Airport is just under an hour. In any case, we have a small selection of near-by groceries, gas stations, and eateries as well as a couple higher-end restaurants. n nOff- Island Advantages: We enjoy being free of summer time crowds on MDI except when we choose. Moreover, we have loads of great attractions right at our doorstep. There are near-by hikes, mountain climbs, and rivers and ponds to paddle that are just as nice as in Acadia. In addition, the near-by Schoodic Point section of Acadia N.P. is every bit as pretty and dramatic as Acadia and much less crowded. The Pierre Monteux School of Conducting has twice-weekly concerts and is only 10 minutes away. n nThe best part, for us, is the endlessly variable spectacle of scenes and sounds on the bay in front of the house. The sun sets behind us and lights up the opposite shore with a wonderful glow, which we have come to call e2809cthe magic houre2809d. At the right time of the month this can be followed by the full moon rising over the water. The Egg Rock Lighthouse can be seen blinking red in between the Porcupine Islands and you can almost always hear the church-like gong of the bell buoy off Hancock Point or harbor seals barking on their ledge across the water. There is a pair of loons usually resident in front of the house and the occasional eagle in a near-by tree. Daytimes, lobster boats are out checking their traps in front of us and Saturdays bring the sailboat races run by the Sorrento Yacht Club. The Hancock Point sailing school has their small boats out practicing every week day during season. Even cloudy days or the occasional storm bring drama to the huge expanse of sky we see. Mornings and evenings usually bring very calm water, ideal for kayaking. nThe house is on a quiet cul de sac running along the shore. A nice place to stroll and meet neighbors.
